Set goals, reflect on the day, analyze workouts and races, and develop a winning mindset

Whether you’re a benchwarmer in high school, an all-star in a division 1 program, or chasing a personal fitness achievement, writing in an athletic journal is an excellent tool for learning and growth in your sport and ultimately life.

We worked with coaches ranging from Olympic to high school levels that have studied and practiced journaling with their own athletes to bring you the journaling exercises that are proven to help athletes.

Hey I'm Daniel...

I created The Athlete’s Journal because I’ve experienced first hand the benefits of an athlete’s journal. As an athlete, I’ve been journaling consistently and have seen the growth it has brought me within my sports of cycling and triathlon. I want to help other dedicated athletes become the best they can be through the practice of journaling so I created this app. I’m always looking forward to feedback, and am working hard to constantly improve the app. I encourage you to drop me a line!

Happy training!

Journaling Made for Endurance Athletes

– Serena Williams

What do Serena Williams, Michael Phelps, and other top athletes have in common?

They journal almost every day.

The value in journaling...

Identify patterns in training and life

As you write about your workouts, injuries, feelings, nutrition, and other life aspects, you will see patterns emerge over time. Looking back through your journal you'll be able to establish what works and what doesn't for your body. This allows you to avoid over-training, ward off injuries, and constantly iterate and improve upon your training plan based off of your own direct feedback.

Clarify dreams & goals

Goals and dreams by themselves are great to have. But just saying you have them or thinking about them is not enough. Through a daily journaling practice, you can write out and plan the steps required to achieve your dreams and goals, essentially creating a blueprint for success. By doing so, you won't find yourself distracted by long-term goals, such as a Marathon or Ironman, because you know your daily actions are always moving you in the right direction.

Become a better learner

The best athletes are those who are great learners and have become students of their sport, and of themselves. Journaling provides the opportunity to learn about yourself, your sport, and the effectiveness of different training methods on your body. Through writing down questions, problems, successes, and failures, you create an opportunity to learn from them and ultimately grow as an athlete, and as a person.

Improve mindfulness

Endurance training is already demanding on the mind and body, so additional life aspects such as work, school, and family only contribute more to filling your headspace with feelings of anxiety, worry, and frustration. Journaling makes you focus on the immediate and encourages you to be more present-minded on the small tasks ahead. This helps with addressing feelings of frustration from the past, such as a workout you didn't complete, and calms anxiety about the future, such as a challenging training block in the week to come, or a big race that culminates an intense 6 month training cycle.

Increase self-confidence

Research has found that journaling improves self-confidence and gives people a greater belief in their abilities. Therefore athletes who journal are more likely to complete tasks such as a training plan or a strict diet. Keeping a journal allows you to give yourself positive daily affirmations and build off of small successes. Over time these small victories will snow-ball into more self-confidence as you work towards big goals, that otherwise may have seemed impossible just a couple months ago. When you reach race day, you'll be able to look back and see just how much work you've put in day in and day out, giving you confidence in your training and preparation.

What we're building

As described above, there are so many benefits of journaling for endurance athletes when it comes to training and other aspects of life.

Journaling doesn't need to be complicated or time-consuming either. With the correct structure and questions to ask yourself, about 10-15 minutes a day is all that's needed to get the benefits.

The nature of endurance sports is time consuming, and mentally and physically taxing. You can go from the highs of a great workout or race, to the lows of injury or over-training in no time. Therefore it's important to have a journal that incorporates this essential part of your life and addresses the emotions, successes, failures, and goals endurance sports bring.
